2024-05-10 I see it's been three months since my last Witty News article. What's been happening with Insanely Witty Stupidity is-- I finished chapter four of "The Critical Mass of the Hybridized Rodent" (and touching up chapters one, two, and three). And, I'm pretty pleased with the way the story is turning out. When it's finished, it will be (most likely) the most thoughtful project Insanely Witty Stupidity has ever shared. And if you don't know what I mean, well-- you just don't know (lol). At the moment, I am re-purposing chapter six and seven of Ghosts of Glory High (from the ol' Hailey's Follies saga). And when I finish, I will write the critical mass's fifth chapter-- and it will be finished. ;) In case you haven't checked out my Slackware-11.0 packages lately, I added patches for TuxNES and Wolf4SDL which implement manual frameskipping features. I'm particularly proud of the way these turned out. I can run Metroid on top of Qemu tcg with (almost) no audio chopping whatsoever by using my new frameskip option to set a video write speed of three frames per second (like: "tuxnes --frameskip=10 metroid.zip"). And, I gave Wolf4SDL an SDL_Delay() option which allows a user to add a delay between frame writes. Don't forget to utilize Wolf4SDL's "--windowed" and "--res" options for maximum performance (for example: "wolf4sdl-wolf-full --windowed --res 320 200 --sdl-delay 50"). The reason I've chosen to target Qemu tcg with such extreme development is that I like to use it to run Slackware-11.0 on top of useless Android APIs (using the Limbo project). Qemu (for those who are not privy) has some serious bottlenecking issues implementing a sound device on top of tcg. So if you're trying to use it to run Slackware-11.0 with decent sound, you can remove Slackware-11.0's default ALSA packages-- and then, extract and install the ALSA packages that are provided under the "recompiled" section on Insanely Witty Stupidity's Slackware-11.0 packages page. Then, you can add an ALSA loopback device to a running system ("modprobe snd-aloop"). And then, you can use arecord to broadcast audio with almost no bottlenecking (preferably with a reduced samplerate) like this: "arecord -c 2 -D hw:0,1,0 -f S16_LE -r 11025 -t raw | nc -l -p <port>". And then (if you're running Limbo on top of an Android host), you'll want to snag a copy of Simple Protocol Player from F-Droid and use it to pick up the feed (obviously, you'll need to use a Qemu "hostfwd" rule to forward the port you're using to the Android host). And, you'll wanna set Simple Protocol Player's port and samplerate (etc) to match the call you're making to arecord. And well, I consider this series of optimizations to be complete (at least for now). I would *really* like to apply the same delay to Wolf4SDL's menus and "fading" animations. But, It seems those implementations are buried DEEP within its graphical code. And, I'm not digging through all that bullshit just to fix a little bit of audio chopping in the menus. I had an opportunity to start up the ol' d8-rape project (d8-rape 80/30-renders ascii pixel effects) a couple of weeks ago. And, some shit fucked me up (well-- let's just say I kinda screwed up my work desktop's Windows registry trying to remove some "bossware" they've decided they need to run on there). Long story short, I got the registry acting "reasonably" enough (lol) so no one would understand what happened. And, I convinced the I-T nitwits to reinstall da Windoze (derrr). And then, I just brought my *own* laptop to work. And, I'm using my Android device for an internet supply. And, fuck 'em-- they can just stick that worthless piece of shit up their asses. Anyway, I was hoping to have a Dr. Mario clone (Outbreak) ready to try out. But, no dice. :( I've been thinking about Insanely Witty Stupidity's "looks" for some time, now. I keep picturing myself replacing all the artwork on the site with ASCII art (perhaps you've seen my old Facebook profile-- or this random thing??) And mahhhn-- that would be pretty boss, yo. And, it would be some nice navigation from a graphical interface to a terminal. :D And then, I start thinking about pages like-- Insanely Witty Stupidity's Case's Cases and Hailey's Follies (see link above) pages. And, they have this nifty artwork that writes under the pages' text. And-- wtf am I supposed to do about *those*, exactly?? :\ And, that's about as far as I get with the thought (lol). I gave the site's "themes" header (/txt/themes.txt) a new PHP feature that defines a "--tag-center" option. The way it works is that-- you can set the option "true" (default) or "false". And, this will change whether or not html "center" tags are ignored (well-- technically, whether or not CSS code will disable centering). The main reason I added this feature is because the Monocles browser for Android (available from F-Droid) doesn't process fixed width fonts properly when applied to text within "center" tags. So, it's nice to be able to ignore centering when I'm using a page like Insanely Witty Stupidity's DuckDuckGo portal. Honestly, I'd like to reformat Insanely Witty Stupidity and do away with "center" tags site wide. But, the option I added is a nice bandage that can relieve my problem. At some point, I'll document the feature properly in the site's manual. Lately, it seems like I always end my Witty News articles with a movie review. And since I was just watching it, I thought I'd give a shout out to that movie /Suspiria/ (the 2018 remake with Tilda Swinton, not the original 1977 film). Personally, I found it to be a fantastic visual film-- with some creepy scenes that will scare the living piss out of most people. Not sure why it is that-- if Mia Goth is in it, I just like the film (lol). Seems to always be the case. :\ From what I've read about it, others weren't so convinced. I think mainly, people are complaining because the film contains images of girls' boobies (oh, nooo!) So if you're a big pussy, you might wanna skip this one. But, I mean-- perhaps you should just throw away your television and stare at four blank walls?? And with your departure (since they're on my mind today), maybe check out this one song by that band Cynic (and-- maybe this other one). |
Random Fact: Insanely Witty Stupidity's icon (the "Oracle") is mysterious and perplexing. The more a person stares at it-- the more bizarre it appears. In reality, the logo is merely three letters inside of a yellow circle. Weird, huh? |
