2022-06-15 I finished building packages for Slackware 15.0. The process took (working on and off) about a month to complete. And (since Luca provided entire Slackware suites for ARM soft float, hard float, and 64-bit), I compiled for the three basic types of ARM systems. I don't even own a soft float ARM. But, I installed a copy on a Pi 2B just to see how it worked. And now, I feel like snagging a few Raspberry Pi 1 systems from Ebay some time in the future. I have plans to write a replacement for my Scrambler page that delivers jobs to multiple systems in a round robin fashion. So-- maybe I'll use Bonslack 15.0 compiled for armv5 in order to implement that, cheaply. :D I did things differently for Slackware 15.0 than I did for 14.2. I compiled (basically) the same packages for x86 and ARM. I made an exception for Wine because, well-- the fuckin' thing doesn't build for ARM (even though it's supposed to). I also built fbdev for the Raspberry Pi. And, I found that VC4 isn't any more efficient than the Pi's framebuffer device. This contradicts everything I've read. But, it looks like the improvements to Mesa are-- the only improvements. VC4 ain't shit (as far as I'm concerned). I wrote more information about this on Insanely Witty Stupidity's Slackware package pages (if you're interested). The great thing about my homemade packages this time around is that-- the same projects are compiled for all five of the targets I chose to build for. I haven't installed Slackware 15.0 on all my systems, yet (including Insanely Witty Stupidity's servers). But, I'll finish that in no time. I've also been checking out a science fiction novella I started a while back titled "The Critical Mass of the Hybridized Rodent". And, I completed an analysis of its two (out of five) chapters-- and what little there was of a third chapter. And, I began re-writing the story so that it is up to my usual standards. I think I will finish the first chapter this weekend, no problem. And, I'll probably even burn through the second chapter a little bit. My girlfriend's coming (from Michigan) to see me in a few days. And, I believe she plans on staying for three weeks. So, there's gonna be a period during the next couple of months where I will be (probably) unable to complete any work for Insanely Witty Stupidity. But, I'll try to poke through my novella here and there when I have time. And hopefully, I can begin writing the last three chapters of the story. I will continue dropping updates every time I complete a chapter (at least). And, I'm betting I'll have the project finished before Thanksgiving. We'll see about that. |
Random Fact: Slackware (a GNU/Linux system maintained under an emphasis of function over form) is the official operating system used to host Insanely Witty Stupidity. Many packages are compiled using various Slackware systems for the purpose of developing the site. And, Insanely Witty Stupidity happily shares those precompiled packages with its users (because-- people may find them useful). |
